Mua Cave Tour from Hanoi, Private, with Bai Dinh and the Trang An Boat

The three big sights of Ninh Binh in one private day, in the order the light asks for: the great gilded Buddhas of Bai Dinh, a rowing boat through the caves at Trang An, and Mua Cave in the late afternoon rather than the midday heat. Every entry fee is paid before you travel.

The day, stop by stop

This is a sample day: add, skip or linger over any stop and we will adjust it. In summer the sun sets after you leave the ridge; if the sunset itself matters, tell us and we will return later or drop you in Ninh Binh.

A vast modern temple complex begun in 2003 on the hill above the small old pagoda of the same name. The electric car drops you at the gate, then you walk the long corridors of stone arhats up to the halls that hold the great bronze Buddhas. Your guide tells you what is old here and what is new, a distinction the signs do not make. Shoulders and knees need covering.

Boat ticket and rower’s tip included

The UNESCO-listed landscape, seen the only way it can be: a local rower takes you along a set route through low caves and past small temples where you can step ashore. Boats seat four, so a group of three or four has one to itself; at busy times a couple or a solo traveller may share with other visitors. Your guide sees you onto the boat and meets you where it lands.

Short drive · about 15 minutes · to the foot of Ngoa Long mountain

Mua Cave viewpoint

15:45 · about 1 hour 45 minutes · about 500 stone steps

Entry ticket included — no ticket booth for you

The climb saved for the best light of the day: about 500 uneven stone steps, then the fork: left to the summit with its stone dragon and Quan Am statue, right to the lower peak and its small stone tower, with the Ngo Dong river winding through the fields below. In winter you reach the top close to sunset. The steps are optional; anyone who stays down waits at the lotus pond.

Is this the right tour for you?

A good fit if

You are based in Hanoi and have one day for Ninh Binh.

You want Bai Dinh, Trang An and Mua Cave without joining a coach.

You would rather climb in the late light than at midday.

You want one number for the whole day, lunch and the tip included.

Look elsewhere if

You are one person on a tight budget; group day tours from Hanoi cover the same three sights for much less.

Long days are hard for someone in your group: about four and a half hours of this one are on the road, and you are back around eight.

You have a flight or an overnight train that evening.

You must have the Trang An boat to yourselves as a couple. Tell us first, because it costs more.

If you are already staying in Ninh Binh and only want the viewpoint, the half day starts from your hotel and skips the drive. See the Mua Cave sunset tour. Or tell us what you want to see, and we will plan a day around it.

Questions before you book

About the day

How long is the tour and when does it start?

It runs About 12.5 hours door to door, leaving 07:30 from your Hanoi hotel and back around 20:00. Starting later cuts time at Mua Cave, so we keep the morning start unless you tell us otherwise.

Where do you pick us up?

At your own hotel, anywhere in central Hanoi, with no meeting point to reach on your own. We can also finish at a Ninh Binh hotel at the same price. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.

How hard is the climb, and can someone stay below?

About 500 uneven stone steps, steep near the top and slippery after rain, with no lift and no other route. The rest of the day is easy walking, with one duck through low caves on the boat. Anyone who skips the climb waits at the lotus pond at the foot.

Do we have the Trang An boat to ourselves?

A group of three or four does. Boats seat four, so at busy times a couple or a solo traveller may share with other visitors. If you want a boat to yourselves, tell us and we will quote it.

Can we change the route or the pace?

Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer at Bai Dinh. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.

Does the guide speak good English?

Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs and the story behind each place as you go.

Booking and practicalities

Is the price per person or for the whole group?

For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest; groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.

How do I pay, and when?

Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes — free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed. Date changes are arranged over WhatsApp.

What should I bring, and do I need cash?

Shoes with grip, a hat, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the pagoda. You do not need cash at any gate, since every ticket is bought for you; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.

What about food allergies?

Tell us when you book. Lunch is ordered ahead, so vegetarian meals and most allergies can be handled, but we cannot promise a kitchen free of peanuts or shellfish.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop the day, and your guide brings ponchos. Wet stone is the real risk at Mua Cave: if the steps are not safe or the site closes, the half day moves to the other light or another date free of charge, or is refunded in full if no date works. On the day from Hanoi, a closed Mua Cave or a halted Trang An boat is replaced by the temples at Hoa Lu with no partial refund, or you can move the date free of charge. Cloud hiding the sunset is not refunded.
