The half day, stop by stop

This is a sample day: add, skip or linger over any stop and we will adjust it. The morning departure is shown; the afternoon one takes the boat first and reaches the ridge about an hour before sunset.

Hotel pickup · about 05:45, or between 13:30 and 15:00 by month · anywhere in Tam Coc, Trang An or Ninh Binh city

Mua Cave viewpoint

06:00 · about 2 hours · about 500 stone steps

Entry ticket included — no ticket booth for you

The Ngo Dong river bending between rice fields and limestone hills, seen from the top at Mua Cave
The small stone tower on the lower peak at Mua Cave
The stone dragon running along the summit ridge at Mua Cave
The stone staircase climbing the ridge at Mua Cave

4 photos · tap to enlarge

About 500 uneven stone steps up Ngoa Long mountain, steep near the top. A fork splits the climb: left past a lookout over the Ngo Dong river to the summit, with its stone dragon and a Quan Am statue facing the old capital of Hoa Lu; right, up a further stair, to a lower peak with a small stone tower, the one place you can see the whole dragon. Many visitors do one and go down; your guide takes you to both, explains why the hills stand alone in a flat plain, and says where to stop, because the rock around the dragon is narrow and jagged, with no real barrier.

The lotus pond and the foot of the mountain

08:00 · about 20 minutes · flat, on foot

The boardwalk across the lotus pond at the foot of Mua Cave

Back down, a boardwalk crosses the pond below the mountain, in flower from about May to July, at its fullest in June and July. The cave that gives the place its name opens near the foot of the steps, small and quickly seen. Anyone who chose not to climb waits here in the shade.

Breakfast near the mountain

08:20 · about 30 minutes · seated

Included

A bowl of noodle soup and tea on a table near Mua Cave

1 photo · tap to enlarge

Noodle soup or eggs with coffee at a family place a few minutes from the gate, after the climb rather than before it. On the afternoon departure this stop is tea and fruit at the foot of the mountain before you go up.

Short drive · about 10 minutes · through the rice fields to Thach Bich pier

Thung Nang by rowed boat

09:00 · about 1 hour · rowed boat, two guests per boat

Entry, boat and rower’s tip included

A rowed boat on the still water of Thung Nang below limestone cliffs
A boat approaching a low limestone grotto at Thung Nang
A small shrine among the trees beside the water at Thung Nang
White egrets over the reeds and water at Thung Nang

4 photos · tap to enlarge

A flooded valley behind Bich Dong that draws a fraction of the Tam Coc crowd. The boat runs about 3 km from Thach Bich pier through two grottoes to a small mountain shrine, and egrets gather on the way back towards evening. A group of three or four takes two boats side by side. In high water the lowest grottoes cannot be passed and the boat turns earlier.

Is this the right tour for you?

A good fit if

You are staying in Tam Coc, Trang An or Ninh Binh city and want the viewpoint at its best hour.

You want both lookouts, and someone who knows which one suits the light that day.

You would rather finish on a quiet boat than queue for a second big sight.

You want one number for the ticket, the boat and the tip, with nothing to settle at any gate.

Look elsewhere if

You are one person on a tight budget. The ticket and a hired bicycle from Tam Coc get you to the same steps.

Steep uneven steps are a problem for you and the view is the only reason you are coming.

You want a guaranteed sunset. Cloud is common, and we do not refund for it.

You are coming from Hanoi for the day: this half day starts at your hotel in Ninh Binh.

If you are based in Hanoi with one day for Ninh Binh, the full day adds Bai Dinh and the Trang An boat before the climb. See the day tour from Hanoi. Or tell us what you want to see, and we will plan a day around it.

Questions before you book

About the day

How long is the tour and when does it start?

It runs About 4.5 hours door to door. The morning pickup is about 05:45; the afternoon one moves with the sunset, from about 13:30 in winter to about 15:00 in June, and we confirm the time for your date in writing.

Will we see the sunrise from the top?

Only in the darker months. The site lists its gate as opening at 06:00, which leaves time to reach the ridge for sunrise from about December to February. From about May to July the sun is already up when the gate opens, and you get low early sun instead.

Where do you pick us up?

At your own hotel, anywhere in Tam Coc, Trang An or Ninh Binh city, with no meeting point to reach on your own. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.

How hard is the climb, and can someone stay below?

About 500 uneven stone steps, steep near the top and slippery after rain, with no lift and no other route; allow 15 to 45 minutes. Around the dragon the rock is narrow and jagged, with no real barrier, so your guide will say where to stop. Anyone who stays below waits at the lotus pond and joins again for the boat.

Can we change the route or the pace?

Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer on the ridge. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.

Does the guide speak good English?

Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs and the story behind each place as you go.

Booking and practicalities

Is the price per person or for the whole group?

For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest; groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.

How do I pay, and when?

Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes — free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed. Date changes are arranged over WhatsApp.

What should I bring, and do I need cash?

Shoes with grip, a hat and water for the morning, a layer for a winter dawn. You do not need cash at any gate, since the ticket, the boat and the tip are bought for you; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.

What about food allergies?

Tell us when you book. Breakfast is at a small family place, so vegetarian meals and most allergies can be handled with notice, but we cannot promise a kitchen free of peanuts or shellfish.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop the day, and your guide brings ponchos. Wet stone is the real risk at Mua Cave: if the steps are not safe or the site closes, the half day moves to the other light or another date free of charge, or is refunded in full if no date works. On the day from Hanoi, a closed Mua Cave or a halted Trang An boat is replaced by the temples at Hoa Lu with no partial refund, or you can move the date free of charge. Cloud hiding the sunset is not refunded.
